Conclusions Olympic-style weightlifting may affect plantar pressure distribution and foot posture in female weightlifters. BMI may also correlate with peak and average plantar pressure in this population. Further research is needed to determine if Olympic-style weightlifting may affect plantar pressure distribution and foot posture in female weightlifters. Background We examined the rate of social networking site (SNS) usage and the relationship between SNS usage and depressive symptoms among older men and women in South Korea. Methods The data were obtained from the Living Profiles of Older People Survey (LPOPS), which comprises a nationally representative sample of non-institutionalized Korean older adults living in the community. A total of 10,073 older persons (4286 men and 5787 women) were included in the analysis. Results A total of 26.0% of the total study population reported to use social network sites. Of the men and women, 32.6 and 21.1%, respectively, used SNS. A higher educational level and higher equivalent household income, lower number of chronic illnesses, no limitation in daily activities, living with others, and having good relationships with friends and neighbors were associated with higher SNS usage among older men and women. SNS usage was significantly associated with reduced depression scores in older men, but not in women. Conclusions The difference in SNS usage between older men and women might be partially explained by differential exposure to digital technologies and disadvantages in education and economic opportunities. Education programs for digitalization and opportunities to engage with technology need to be provided.A total of 117 Bacillus strains were isolated from Miang, a culture relevant fermented tea of northern Thailand. These strains were collected from 16 sampling sites in north Thailand. In this collection 95 isolates were tannin-tolerant Bacillus capable of growth on nutrient agar supplemented with 0.5% (w/v) total tannins from tea leaves extract (TE). The strains were also positive for pectinase, xylanase and amylase activity, while 91 and 86 isolates were positive for cellulase and β-mannanase, respectively. Only 21 isolates producing extracellular tannase were selected for further characterization. Identification by 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis revealed that more than 50% (11 of 21 isolates) were Bacillus tequilensis, whereas the remaining were B. siamensis (3), B. megaterium (3), B. aryabhattai (3) and B. toyonensis (1). B. tequilensis K34.2 produced the highest extracellular tannase activity of 0.60 U/mL after cultivation at 37 °C for 48 h. In addition, all 21 isolates were resistant to 0.3% (w/v) bile salt, sensitive to gentamicin, erythromycin, vancomycin and kanamycin and also tolerant to acidic condition. Cell hydrophobicity varied from 9.4 to 80.4% and neutralized culture supernatants of some Bacillus isolates showed bacteriocin producing potentiality against Samonella enterica serovar Typhimurium TISTR 292. All tested probiotic properties indicated that B. tequilensis K19.3, B. tequilensis K34.2 and B. siamensis K19.1 had high probiotic potential. This is the first report describing tannin-tolerant Bacillus and their extracellular tannase producing capability in Miang, a traditional fermented tea of Thailand. In this communication, we present a streamlined, reproducible synthetic method for the production of size-tunable poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) nanoparticles (PMMANPs) and amine-functionalized block-copolymer PMMANPs (H2N-PMMANPs) by varying subcritical concentrations (i.e., below the concentration required to form micelles at 1 atm and 20 °C) of sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS). We plotted the Z-average size data against SDS concentration, which revealed a second-order exponential decay function, expressed as [...].Frequent attenders (FAs) have an impact on the medical resources and the quality of care. In Taiwan, the characteristics of FAs remain unclear in primary care. Outpatient data were screened from a central clinic within six surrounding fishing villages in northeastern Taiwan in 2017. FAs were defined as those who made >18 visits in one year, and those who made ?18 visits were defined as non-frequent attenders (NFAs). Data of FAs and NFAs were collected and compared. The major diagnoses were reported using International Classifications of Diseases, Tenth Edition (ICD-10) codes. A total of 1586 subjects and 9077 visits were enrolled, including 119 FAs and 1467 NFAs. FAs had a more advanced age compared to NFAs. Both FAs and NFAs had more visits in summer. FAs had consumed high prescriptions and related costs. FAs also had higher therapeutic and first visit costs than NFAs. Comparing with age- sex-matched NFAs, FAs were positively associated with musculoskeletal diseases (M00-M99), hematological diseases (D50-D89), endocrine diseases (E00-E90), and mental disorders (F00-F99). Large-scale local datasets and suitable definitions of FAs for Taiwanese subjects are needed. We investigated the prognostic value of standard electroencephalography, a 30-min recording using 21 electrodes on the scalp, during the early post-cardiac arrest period, and evaluated the performance of electroencephalography findings combined with other clinical features for predicting favourable outcomes in comatose out-of-hospital cardiac arrest (OHCA) survivors treated with targeted temperature management (TTM). This observational registry-based study was conducted at a tertiary care hospital in Korea using the data of all consecutive adult non-traumatic comatose OHCA survivors who underwent standard electroencephalography during TTM between 2010 and 2018. The primary outcome was a 6-month favourable neurological outcome (Cerebral Performance Category score of 1 or 2). Among 170 comatose OHCA survivors with median electroencephalography time of 22 hours, a 6-month favourable neurologic outcome was observed in 34.1% (58/170). https://www.selleckchem.com/products/VX-809.html After adjusting other clinical characteristics, an electroencephalography background with dominant alpha and theta waves had the highest odds ratio of 13.03 (95% confidence interval, 4.69-36.22) in multivariable logistic analysis. A combination of other clinical features (age less then 65 years, initial shockable rhythm, resuscitation duration less then 20 min) with an electroencephalography background with dominant alpha and theta waves increased predictive performance for favourable neurologic outcomes with a high specificity of up to 100%. A background with dominant alpha and theta waves in standard electroencephalography during TTM could be a simple and early favourable prognostic finding in comatose OHCA survivors.
